Murals are works of art that can bring communities together, and the Quaker Oats mural in downtown Owosso, Michigan is no exception. In July of 2023, artists Jennifer Ross and Phillip Luckhurst came together to restore the faded Quaker Oats mural in downtown Owosso. Their mission was to bring some vibrancy and life to their beloved small town, located in the heart of Shiawassee County. They hope their hard work will eventually ignite an artistic flame throughout the community and prompt other Owosso citizens to pick up their brushes and create murals of their own. They believe art can bring the community closer together and generate economic growth for local businesses in Owosso's historic downtown sector. We caught up with Jim Williams (Co-Chairman of Project KidSight for district 11A1), his wife Soozi Williams (Project KidSight Ambassador for district 11A1), and Ted Robinson (Co-District Coordinator for district 11A1), as they conducted vision screenings outside Covenant House in Detroit, Michigan. Project KidSight is a FREE vision screening program for children between the ages of 6 months and 5-years old. Each screening takes a matter of seconds to conduct and can provide families and eye care professionals with the information they need to catch preventable vision issues long before symptoms arise. In many cases, these screenings have saved the sight of thousands of children across the country. Using specialized vision screening cameras and software, the Lions of Michigan are able to take binocular images of a child's eyes in order to detect possible disorders that could result in vision loss later in life.
